Rota
A rota is a plan showing which employees work which shifts over a period, usually a week. Standard in UK shift businesses, a good rota matches staffing to demand, respects availability and legal rest rules, shares hours fairly, and reaches every employee reliably when published or changed.
The word comes from the Latin for “wheel” — the same rotation idea as “roster”, which is the more common term outside the UK. In practice the two words are interchangeable; UK hospitality, retail and care overwhelmingly say rota.
A rota is more than a grid: it is a demand plan (right people for how busy you will be), a fairness ledger (who gets the good and bad shifts), and a legal artefact (evidence of hours offered against Working Time Regulations limits). Most rota pain comes from tools that only handle the grid part.
