Open shift
An open shift is a shift published to a pool of eligible employees rather than assigned to one person. Everyone qualified and available is notified at once, anyone can claim it, and a manager approves the claim — replacing the one-call-at-a-time phone tree for absence cover.
Open shifts flip cover from serial to parallel: instead of ringing down a list, the whole eligible group learns about the gap at the same moment, and the people who actually want extra hours step forward. Eligibility rules (role match, rest limits, overtime caps) are enforced automatically.
Staff tend to like the mechanism as much as managers do — extra hours become visible and fairly offered, and a notification can be declined guilt-free in a way a direct call from the boss cannot.
