Bradford Factor
The Bradford Factor is an absence measure calculated as S × S × D, where S is the number of separate absence spells and D is total days absent in the same period. Squaring the spell count gives repeated absences more weight. The score does not explain their cause.
One ten day spell produces a score of 10. Five spells totalling ten days produce 250. These examples show how the arithmetic changes with frequency; they do not establish an employment outcome.
Check the underlying records and relevant circumstances before interpreting the result. A score should not automatically trigger disciplinary action. Use the linked worked examples and primary guidance to understand the limitations.
